From 8 to 22 June 2026, members of the EucXylo research programme and the Department of Forest and Wood Science at Stellenbosch University visited Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), Germany. The visit formed part of the second workshop of the LiFeSystem project funded by the LMU–SU Collaboration Grant in the aim to strengthen ongoing research ties between the two institutions.
The delegation consisting of Prof. David Drew, Dr. Leandra Moller-Hanekom, Dr. Isáira Leite e Lopes, and Dr. Maria Perles, visited their collaborators in the Faculty of Geosciences namely: Prof. Lukas Lehnert, Dr. Wolfgang Obermeier, Mr. Matthias Bechon, and Mr. Vinzenz Zerres.

LMU–SU Networking Week
The visit coincided with the first ever LMU–SU Networking Week that ran from 8 – 12 June. This event brought together all research groups funded through the SU-LMU collaboration programme. After inspiring presentations made by all principal investigators on the first day the remainder of the week brought ample opportunity for, discussion and networking.

LMU Research Forest Visit (Landshut)
The EucXylo team visited the LMU research forest near Landshut on 13 June which provided an excellent insight into the breadth of research being conducted within the LabForest and Survey teams. The day started with presentations in the morning and a visit to the forest in the afternoon. Presentations covered hydrological modelling, forest water dynamics, and bark beetle impacts. These topics highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of the LabForest and Survey projects and how researchers in these two projects integrate ecology, physiology, and forest management.

In the forest the EucXylo team was shown active forest management systems, with researchers demonstrating how they prevent bark beetle outbreaks in harvested timber. In addition, practical demonstrations on how both natural regeneration strategies and replanting approaches are applied in the LMU forest was demonstrated. The visit also included demonstrations on various forest monitoring systems such as soil moisture sensors and trackers for water availability, and water quality.
Collaboration and Future Directions
The week concluded with an insight into the interface between wood processing and science in the morning. Following a demonstration on how x-ray technology is used to optimise timber quality and yield during sawing, the team visited the TUM Xylotheque a wood “library” collection that contains wood specimens from around the world. The visit showed how research connects directly to industry practice. It also highlighted the importance of efficient resource use in forestry systems.

Following an inspiring morning the team spent the afternoon exploring opportunities for future collaboration including joint research projects and student exchange programs.
These discussions highlighted the strong alignment between EucXylo, LabForest and Survey in areas such as forest monitoring and modelling, ecology, wood formation and climate change research.
Overall, the visit reinforced a shared objective: improving scientific understanding of forest systems and supporting sustainable forestry under changing environmental conditions. Importantly, it also further strengthened the established collaboration between SU and LMU.
