Spring Campaign 2025 at the IMPACT Open-Air Lab

Every September, the EucXylo team comes together for our Spring Campaign, an intensive week of fieldwork, measurement, and collaboration at the IMPACT Open-Air Lab in Stellenbosch. From 15–19 September 2025, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and students joined forces to collect vital data and test new approaches to understanding tree growth and wood formation.

Building Collaboration in the Field

The Spring Campaign is more than just data collection! It’s an opportunity for researchers across disciplines and career stages to work side by side.

Key Measurements and Activities

Across the week, different groups focused on a variety of experiments and measurements.
One of our doctoral candidates Anika Keuck was collecting leaf samples for fungal microbiome analysis. The samples will be used to investigate the influence of seasonal fluctuations and Eucalyptus species on the microbiome

These datasets will be used to calibrate growth models, link wood properties to environmental drivers, and improve long-term monitoring.

Dr. Michelle Eckert is currently investigating the impact of planting density across various Eucalyptus species on feeding activity during the early developmental stages of tree growth. She spent the spring campaign gaining insight into how planting density influences soil ecosystem processes. Her research is essential for informing sustainable management and conservation practices within the forestry sector. Looking Ahead

The 2025 Spring Campaign once again demonstrated the value of intensive, collaborative fieldwork for advancing forestry science. The data collected this week will feed into ongoing projects across the EucXylo program, helping us answer key questions about tree physiology, forest management, and sustainable wood production.

We’ll be sharing more updates from the field and insights into specific measurements on our LinkedIn and Instagram pages, follow us there for photos and behind-the-scenes stories from the week.
