Post-doctoral Fellowship: Data-Driven Forest Science

EucXylo | Stellenbosch University

Location: Stellenbosch, South Africa
Start date: February 2026 (negotiable)
Application deadline: 30 November 2025

About the Project

The Hans Merensky Chair in Advanced Modelling of Growth and Wood Formation in Eucalypts (EucXylo) has launched the IMPACT Open-Air Lab, a pioneering forest research facility in Somerset West.
This site integrates sensors, satellites, and data science to uncover how Eucalyptus trees grow and respond to their environment. The IMPACT Lab represents one of South Africa’s few long-term, intensively monitored forest experiments, blending IoT, field measurements, and remote sensing across an 11-hectare site. Fellowship Focus

This postdoctoral fellow will play a central role in data integration, analysis, and modelling across IoT and remote-sensing datasets.
We’re seeking a data-savvy researcher who thrives at the intersection of environmental science, analytics, and technology, someone eager to transform complex data into actionable ecological insights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate students and service providers operating remote-sensing and IoT platforms at the IMPACT site.
  • Manage, curate, and analyse multi-scale datasets (field, IoT, and satellite).
  • Develop reproducible data pipelines and databases (Python, PostgreSQL/PostGIS).
  • Publish high-quality papers as lead author and collaborate with postgraduate students.
  • Assist with proposal writing, fieldwork, and limited undergraduate teaching.
  • Uphold best practices in version control, documentation, and data governance (Git, metadata, reproducible workflows).

Candidate Requirements

  • PhD (completed within the last 5 years) in Remote Sensing, Environmental Monitoring, Data Science, or related field.
  • Proficiency in Python (pandas, geopandas, rasterio) and SQL (PostGIS or equivalent).
  • Experience with remote-sensing workflows, scientific data management, and statistical analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Desirable: Experience with Docker, cloud/HPC, and collaborative coding platforms (GitHub/GitLab).

Fellowship Details

  • Duration: 1 year (renewable to 2 years, based on performance)
  • Stipend: R370,000 per annum (tax-free)
  • Laptop allowance: R10,000
  • Funding: Fully covered by EucXylo; additional top-up applications encouraged
  • Location: Stellenbosch campus, with regular work at the IMPACT field site
