EucXylo is pleased to congratulate former Postdoctoral Research Fellow Dr. Michelle Eckert on the publication of her latest research in Pedobiologia.
The paper, “Seasonal variation exerts a stronger influence on soil feeding activity than planting density in plots of young, developing Eucalyptus species,” was published in Pedobiologia (Volume 116, 2026) and adds valuable new insights into the factors influencing below-ground ecosystem processes in young Eucalyptus plantations.

Dr. Eckert’s research focused on soil feeding activity, an important indicator of soil biological functioning and ecosystem health. The study was conducted at the Open-Air Laboratory (IMPACT OAL) in Somerset West, South Africa, where four commercially important Eucalyptus species were monitored under different planting densities.
Using the bait-lamina test, a widely recognised, non-destructive method for measuring soil fauna feeding activity, the study investigated how stand age, planting density and seasonal conditions influence below-ground biological processes during the early stages of plantation development.

The findings demonstrated that seasonal climatic variation had a substantially greater influence on soil feeding activity than initial planting density. Across all four Eucalyptus species, feeding activity closely followed seasonal environmental conditions, while planting density showed only weak and species-specific effects during the first years of stand development. The work suggests that long-term monitoring will be essential for understanding how forest development influences soil ecosystem functioning over time.
This publication builds on Dr. Eckert’s previous work on the bait-lamina technique. During her postdoctoral research, she evaluated alternative bait formulations for assessing soil arthropod functional activity in Eucalyptus plantations. That study confirmed the standard bran-based bait as the most reliable option while demonstrating that jelly-based bait could serve as a practical alternative where standard materials are unavailable. The research was published in Pedobiologia in 2025.
The latest publication was co-authored by Dr. Leandra Moller-Hanekom, Mr. Richard Carkeek and Prof. David Drew, reflecting the collaborative research conducted within EucXylo and at the IMPACT Open-Air Laboratory.
