What had the pleasure of welcoming Grade 11 and 12 students from Newberry House School to the EucXylo microscopy facilities for an exciting day of learning and discovery. Guided by their teachers, Marele Dicks and Liezel Pienaar, the students began their visit with a warm welcome and introduction to forestry by Prof. Drew. They gained insight into the importance of forestry research and how wood formation is studied at the IMPACT OAL site.

After their introduction, the students were given the opportunity to have a hands-on experience in the microscopy labs, where they:
– Learned how to sample trees and prepare specimens for microscopic analysis
– Observed wood anatomical features using different types of microscopes
– Discovered how microscopy helps researchers understand wood formation and its role in sustainable forestry
It was truly rewarding to see the students engaged and eager to learn about the science behind tree growth and wood structure.
We had a fantastic time hosting them and look forward to more educational interactions like this.
