IMPACT OAL and INSPIRE OAL advance collaborative forest science
South Africa now hosts two sister Open-Air Laboratories (OALs) dedicated to cutting-edge forestry research: the IMPACT OAL at Lourensford, Somerset West, and the INSPIRE OAL at Innovation Africa, University of Pretoria. These labs provide collaborative research infrastructure that allows scientists to intensively measure and model tree growth, wood formation, and forest ecosystem processes at multiple scales.

Unlike traditional growth-and-yield trials or genetics experiments, Open-Air Laboratories focus on variability and real-world conditions, creating opportunities to explore a wide range of scientific questions. Researchers introduce contrasts in planting and management to generate data for modeling, technology testing, and ecological studies, making the labs highly versatile for experimental forestry.

The seven pillars of these OALs guide their research:
- Intensive monitoring of trees and ecosystems
- Precision modeling of growth and wood formation
- Technology development and testing
- Engagement of young scientists
- Collaborative partnerships across engineering, ecology, genetics, AI, and more
- Research at plantation scale
- Open access to data for broader scientific benefit
State-of-the-art infrastructure supports these activities, including high-speed internet, telemetry systems, drone operation gateways, solar-powered electricity, and secure field sites. The labs also foster interdisciplinary collaboration, combining forest science, engineering, AI, applied maths, and molecular biology.
Open-Air Laboratories are more than just field sites, they are innovation hubs. From student-led experiments to collaborative technology trials like smWoef, these labs allow researchers to explore new frontiers in forestry science.
