EucXylo Researcher Wins International Award for Low-Cost Wireless Dendrometer System

We are pleased to congratulate Chris Erasmus on receiving an award at the FAO World Food Forum, held at the FAO headquarters in Rome. The award acknowledges his work on developing a low-cost wireless dendrometer and environmental sensing system designed to support precision forestry.

The system enables researchers and foresters to collect accurate, near real-time, fully remote and continuous data on tree growth and environmental conditions. Its affordability and accessibility make it a valuable tool for improving how we monitor trees and understand their responses to their surroundings.

Chris extends his thanks to Prof. Dave Drew and Prof. MJ Booysen, whose combined expertise and guidance were instrumental in bridging the gap between engineering and forestry throughout the development process. He also acknowledges the IMPACT OAL team for their hands-on support in building, testing, deploying, and maintaining the systems in the field.
