DSTI and FSA Visit Marks a Milestone for Forestry Research at IMPACT OAL

The IMPACT Open-Air Laboratory (OAL) recently had the privilege of welcoming esteemed representatives from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and Forestry South Africa (FSA). The visit marked an important moment in our journey to advance sustainable forestry research and strengthen collaborative efforts between government, industry, and science.

This visit was especially meaningful given the pivotal role DSTI and FSA play in supporting the IMPACT OAL. The laboratory benefits from funding contributions by FSA, which are made possible through DSTI’s mobilization of resources to advance national research infrastructure. Their support continues to fuel our mission of exploring innovative approaches to forestry science, with a particular focus on the growth and development of Eucalyptus trees under changing environmental conditions.

The delegation included:

  • DSTI: Dr. Mmboneni Muofhe (Deputy Director General), Ms. Sunita Kalan, and Ms. Buliswa Omodona
  • FSA: Dr. Ronald Heath and Mr. Stefan Links

A Day of Dialogue and Discovery

The visit began with a lunch hosted at the IMPACT research station, where guests were treated to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and ocean. This tranquil setting offered the perfect backdrop for informal discussions about the future of forestry research in South Africa and the potential for greater scientific collaboration.

Following the lunch, the delegation participated in a guided tour of the Open-Air Laboratory. They were introduced to members of the EucXylo research team and gained firsthand insight into the laboratory’s work. Discussions centered around:

  • The physiology of Eucalyptus trees and the processes of wood formation
  • Advanced methodologies being used both in the field and the laboratory
  • Emerging knowledge products, tools, and innovations developed through the project’s research initiatives

Advancing Forestry Innovation in South Africa

Having Dr. Muofhe and his team on site was an invaluable opportunity for the EucXylo group to present their progress, share insights, and receive feedback from national leaders in science and industry. The visit underscored the importance of continued investment in forestry research and highlighted the collaborative spirit necessary to tackle the sector’s most pressing environmental and industrial challenges.

We are deeply grateful for the time and interest shown by DSTI and FSA during their visit. Their presence reaffirms the relevance and urgency of the work being done at IMPACT OAL and strengthens our resolve to push the boundaries of forestry science in service of a sustainable future.
