Earlier this month, we had the privilege of welcoming Prof. Mike Wingfield , Prof. Brenda Wingfield, Dr. Wilma Nel, and Sandisiwe Jali from FABI University of Pretoria, along with Prof. Francois Roets from Stellenbosch University, to the IMPACT OAL research plantation. Bringing expertise in forest pathology, entomology, molecular biology, conservation ecology, and disease diagnostics, they contribute to advancing research on forest health.
Together with EucXylo PhD student Ms. Anika Keuck-Engelbrecht, the team explored emerging Eucalyptus pests and pathogens, discussing strategies for sample collection and long-term monitoring.
This visit not only supports Anika’s PhD research but also paves the way for future collaborations between Stellenbosch University and FABI. With Prof. Roets as a co-supervisor and collaborator Prof. Mike Wingfield bringing decades of expertise in Eucalyptus pests and diseases, this project is set to generate valuable insights.
Despite the intense summer heat, the discussions were invaluable! The IMPACT OAL offers a unique opportunity to study how abiotic stress, inter-tree competition, and host genotype shape pest and pathogen dynamics in Eucalyptus.
