Ofentse Mathibela is a postdoctoral fellow with EucXylo, working under the leadership of Prof David Drew. Her research focuses on understanding how Eucalyptus trees respond to environmental and biological stressors under field conditions, with particular emphasis on drought, insect pests, and pathogens.

She plays a central role in the development and management of the INSPIRE (Innovation-Africa Stress Physiology & Infection Research Experiment) Open Air Laboratory, a large-scale experimental platform established in collaboration with the University of Pretoria. The site enables long-term, real-world monitoring of Eucalyptus growth and stress responses across different genotypes and environmental conditions.
Within EucXylo, Ofentse leads the coordination of research activities linked to the Open Air Laboratory, including the initiation of new projects, co-supervision of postgraduate students, and collaboration with academic, industry, and technology partners. Her work also involves integrating sensor-based approaches to improve the monitoring and understanding of tree performance in dynamic field environments.
Through this work, she contributes to advancing resilient forestry systems and strengthening collaborative research between institutions such as Stellenbosch University and other national partners.
