The plant microbiome is increasingly being recognized for its potential role in resilience towards environmental stressors. Anika’s PhD will focus on improving the understanding of the leaf fungal microbiome of young Eucalyptus trees. Conducted at the IMPACT OAL, the project will assess how tree species, planting density and environmental conditions such as seasonal changes influence fungal community composition and tree susceptibility to insect pests and pathogens. This project is an inter-institutional collaboration between Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria, overseen by Profs. David Drew, Francois Roets and Bernard Slippers.
