The EucXylo team is based at the Department of Forest and Wood Science (DFWS) at Stellenbosch University (SU), which celebrated its centenary in 2018, and is widely acknowledged as one of Africa’s premier tertiary education and research institutions. Located in the historic tourist town of Stellenbosch, staff and students at the University enjoy a relaxed and pleasant lifestyle, close to mountains and sea. The DFWS in the Faculty of AgriSciences at SU, the only one of its kind in South Africa, has had a long history with the University. Attracting students from around the world, and with strong international linkages and collaborations, the DFWS prides itself on research excellence with a diverse, friendly culture.

A: Students from a wide range of backgrounds are welcome to apply, including from applied fields like Forest and Wood Science, Plant Biology, Genetics and Horticulture, or more basic sciences, including Mathematics, Biochemistry, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. However, we will only consider students who have achieved above-average results in prior degrees. Some restrictions may apply and applicants can be expected to be subjected to certain biometric/ competency testing.

Students will have the opportunity to present at least one research paper at an international scientific conference in South Africa or abroad. The Chair will also provide some students with the opportunity to be based for a period of time at an overseas lab; this could be in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Belgium, Australia, France, Germany, etc. Students will be encouraged to attend workshops and seminars, particularly to develop skills needed to complete their project.

Students must register full-time and be based on the Stellenbosch campus of the University. Students will be expected to regularly attend and present at stakeholder meetings, and provide written feedback at the end of the year. At least two peer-reviewed publications will be expected from PhD candidates by the time of graduation.

The Chair aspires to provide bursaries to potential MSc or PhD students should the project be within the scope of our and our funding body’s goals. Please contact us for further information.
